The stories are accompanied by dynamic mapping, audio, text and vivid photography that provide a more intimate illustration of Philadelphia and can help you find your way around once you arrive.

Concentrated on insider, lesser-known Philadelphia experiences, SoundAboutPhilly combines interesting tales, fun facts and lively music to tell not only stories from the city’s rich past, but also its vibrant present. You’ll hear about our nation’s founding and the heroes and heroines who struggled for freedom centuries ago, but you’ll soon discover that Philadelphia is a city that is not stuck in the past. Dynamic mapping is included with each tour segment which indicates where the segment begins. If you like what you hear, send the tour on to a friend.

The title ‘Life: a user’s manual’ is taken from a novel of the same name by Georges Perec. In his novel, he peels away the outer wall of a ten story building in Paris and proceeds to describe the interior of each apartment and the stories of its inhabitants. As observers, we are led through a sequence of readings and views as we mentally navigate from one apartment to the next.

The story’s setting is a three-mile radius near downtown Los Angeles, a city known for not having a center. This ethnically complex location is documented through archival stills and films and through contemporary images that either reproduce or evoke them.
