The title ‘Life: a user’s manual’ is taken from a novel of the same name by Georges Perec. In his novel, he peels away the outer wall of a ten story building in Paris and proceeds to describe the interior of each apartment and the stories of its inhabitants. As observers, we are led through a sequence of readings and views as we mentally navigate from one apartment to the next.

Tate Modern’s Bafta-award winning Multimedia Guide is a unique way for visitors to find out more about the art on display. Holding a small computer as you walk through the galleries, you can see videos and still images that provide additional context for the art, take part in interactive games, listen to commentaries, and play art-related music. Tate was the first museum in the UK to trial such a system, back in 2002, and now becomes the first to introduce it as a fully-fledged tour.

Sonic City (2002-04) is a new form of interactive music instrument using the city as an interface. It enables users to create a real-time personal soundscape of electronic music by walking through and interacting with urban environments. Paths are considered as musical compositions and mobility through the shifting contexts of a city as a large scale musical gesture.
We have [designed], [implemented] and [evaluated] a wearable prototype. The system retrieves information about environmental context and user action, and maps it to the real-time audio processing of urban sounds, resulting in music heard through headphones. When wearing this system, one engages into a musical duet with the city: urban atmospheres, random encounters and everyday activities all participate in creating music as you are walking.
At the cross-road between urban exploration and experimental music making, Sonic City promotes the integration of everyday life settings and practices into personal forms of aesthetic expression with the help of Ubiquitous Computing.

Every Environment is Text-Rich #4 is an interactive, web-based artwork that takes images from around the World and presents them in one frame. Viewers determine which images they would like to see layered on top of one another, but can only do so by their verbal description. They have no way of knowing what the images will look like, as the sources are live webcams, dependent on weather conditions and the time of day. Some cams change their positions, so even a selection of the same sources in quick succession may not lead to a similar combined image. The work allows the viewer to see the whole world at once, live.
